Deng Shiqing creates work that conveys some of the very contradictions of being a professional artist based in China. Whether she’s working on paper or canvas, large or small, she manages to find a delicate balance classical traditions and modern, contemporary sensibilities. Most of her figurative works depict human subjects, many of whom are based on close friends or family members, and they’re often portrayed as somewhat resigned or disaffected. Shiqing earned an MFA at the New York Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been exhibited at the National Museum of China in Beijing, Da Fen Art Museum in Shenzen, the United Nations’ building, Sotheby’s in New York City, as well as in group shows in New York and Miami.
